Definition of Process Sigma Measure
Sigma is a statistical concept that represents how much variation there is in a process or management system relative to customer specifications. The process of determining Sigma value is based on defining the number of defects per million opportunities (DPMO). And, the ultimate goal when deploying Six Sigma approach consists of achieving 3.4 defects per million opportunities. But, to increase a Sigma level you have to decrease the process variation. The magnitude of the variation in processes or management systems affects the quality of your products or services:
- With too much variation in the process it is hard to produce products and services within customer specifications. And, usually you get a low sigma value between 0 and 2
- With moderate variation in the system the most of the products or services meet customer specifications. You tend to be least imperfect and you get a sigma value between 3 and 5
- With little variation in the process virtually all products and services meet customer specifications. This means that you get less than 4 defects per million opportunities and you rich a high sigma value closed to 6
